Mr Wallis asked the Minister for Primary Industry, upon notice: (!) Did the Standing Committee on Fisheries, at a recent meeting, discuss the possibility of an import licence being granted to the firm of Oyster Farmers Coffun Bay Ply Ltd for the import of live oyster spat from Japan.

(2)   If so, what (a) decision was reached and (b) reasons were given for the decision by the committee on this matter.


Mr Sinclair - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   Yes.

(2)   (a) A report was prepared for submission to the Australian Fisheries Council which will meet in Hobart in March 1972 and (b) The committee is nol a decision making body nor is the Council, but its recommendation will be submitted to the Minister for Customs and Excise who has the administrative responsibility.
