Mr ANDERSON (Hume) .- 1 shall be brief. Everybody seems to be controversial to-night, but I will speak to the clause. The honorable member for Eden-Monaro (Mr. Allan Fraser) and the honorable member for Scullin (Mr. Peters) said that the clause will make the proposed payments retrospective, and they asked why the Government did not make pension increases retrospective. They said the Government supporters were hypocritical. I remind honorable members on the Opposition side that when they were in office they did not make a single pension payment retrospective although they claimed to be a party of high principles. I must say that they carried out their high principles, because on the only occasion in the history of Australia when pensions were reduced, the decreases were' not made retrospective.
