Mr L R JOHNSON (HUGHES, NEW SOUTH WALES) son asked the Minister, upon notice -

1.   Have nuclear-powered submarines been developed by several nations?

2.   Does this craft enjoy tremendous advantages over the conventionally-powered type?

3.   Is the Royal Australian Navy submarine fleet completely comprised of vessels of the conventionallypowered type?

4.   Are any nuclear-powered submarines under construction for the Royal Australian Navy?

5.   Are any submarines under construction for the Navy; if so, when were the orders placed?

Mr Osborne (EVANS, NEW SOUTH WALES) (Minister for Air) - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: -

1.   As far as is known, by the United States of America only.

2.   Yes.

3.   There are no submarines in the Royal Australian Navy. The Royal Navy submarines currently based on Sydney are conventionally powered. 4 and S. No.
