Mr Swartz (DARLING DOWNS, QUEENSLAND) z asked the Minister representing the Minister for the Navy, upon notice -

1.   Was a recent ocean gravity survey undertaken by submarine for the Royal Australian Navy?

2.   If so, was this work part of the programme for the International Geophysical Year?

3.   What were the areas included in the survey, and will a report be published when the results have been tabulated?

Mr McMahon (LOWE, NEW SOUTH WALES) (Minister for Primary Industry) - The Minister for the Navy has furnished the following replies: -

1.   Yes. H.M.S. "Telemachus" in June-July, 1956. The survey was carried out in co-operation, with the Bureau of Mineral Resources and the Columbia University, New York.

2.   Results of the subject survey will be incorporated with those from similar surveys carried out by other nations before and during the international geophysical year which commences 1st July, 1957.

3.   Sydney to Wellington, Wellington to Auckland, Auckland to Tonga, Tonga to Suva, Suva to Sydney. The object is to prepare an international gravity survey of the whole earth and a report will be published when all the results have been coordinated.
