Mr CHIFLEY (MACQUARIE, NEW SOUTH WALES) (Treasurer) - Representations have been made to me in regard to the taxation proposals of the Government referred to by the honorable member. The amending legislation now before the House provides that any donations made last year will be treated on the basis that previously operated, and that those made in future will be dealt with according to a system of rebates, having regard to the rate of tax paid. Some of the points put to the honorable member are not quite correct. It is apparent, that if the statement be accurate, the Commonwealth Treasury has in effect been paying £300 of the £400 donated to the hospital; in other words, the whole of the contribution was not actually made by the company, because three-quarters of it was borne by the Treasury on account of the lower amount that it received in tax. The whole position will be examined.
