Mr Drakeford (MARIBYRNONG, VICTORIA) d asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice -

1.   ls it a fact that the interstate shipping services now convey over 2,000,000 tons of freight annually between New South Wales and Victoria?

2.   What is the actual tonnage conveyed annually by rail between New South Wales and Victoria via (a) Tocumwal and (!>) Albury?

3.   Have any plans been made for the railways to undertake the carriage of the whole of the freight in tho event of a national emergency necessitating the port of Sydney being closed? "

Mr Street - The answers, to the honorable member's questions are as follows : -

1.   Statistics show that tonnage shipped interstate from New South Wales ports approximate 2,000,000 tons annually. Nodirectional statistics are compiled.

2.   Information at the disposal of the Defence Department is that approximately 68,000 tons are conveyed by rail between New South Wale* and Victoria via Albury and Tocumwal combined.

3.   Plans have been made to deal with situations such as that envisaged by the honorable member.
