Notice given 25 May 2000

2255  Senator McLucas: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry—

(1) Is the Minister aware of statements made by the Member for Leichardt (Mr Entsch) that there are ‘corrupt and dishonest elements within AFMA’ (Australian Fisheries Management Authority).

(2) What action has the Minister taken to investigate the allegation.

(3) Given that the Minister said in an answer to a question in the House of Representatives (House of Representatives Hansard , 13 April 2000, p.15221) that he had written to Mr Entsch and requested that Mr Entsch provide details of the allegations: (a) when did the Minister write; and (b) can a copy of the correspondence be provided.

(4) Did the Minister receive a response; if so, can a copy of the response be provided.

(5) Given that on 14 April 2000, Mr Entsch said that he ‘was prepared to back up all the evidence that I have, and I will continue to challenge them. I have written, recently written again to the Minister, and argued on, that I believe that it was, that the decision was wrong’: (a) when did Mr Entsch write to the Minister giving details of the allegations that he has made publicly; and (b) can a copy of all correspondence between the Minister and Mr Entsch be provided.

(6) (a) Has the Board of the AFMA considered these comments and has it made any decisions or recommendations to the Minister about them; (b) can a copy of the decisions or recommendations be provided; and (c) can a copy of any correspondence between the Minister and the AFMA on the matter be provided.

(7) Has the matter been referred to the Australian Federal Police; if so, by whom; if not, why not.

(8) Is the Minister undertaking any further investigation or action on the matter; if so, what is the nature of this investigation or action.
