The Minister for Community Services (Senator Grimes) at the request of the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce (Senator Button): To move on the next day of sitting-That leave be given to introduce a Bill for an Act relating to financial assistance by the Commonwealth for certain research and development.

Senator Vallentine: To move on the next day of sitting-That the Senate-

(a) notes the arrest of 15 bike riders at the Nurrungar joint defence space communications station in South Australia on 30 April 1986, who have since been charged with trespassing on prohibited land and were held in jail until 12 May 1986;

(b) views with disquiet the fact that according to a recent poll referred to in a paper commissioned by the Australian National University Peace Research Centre only 1 per cent of Australians could even name the joint facility at Nurrungar;

(c) recognises that in the event of the implementation of the Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI) popularly known as Star Wars, the Nurrungar facility will provide full-time surveillance of Soviet missile launch areas which is essential for the program and is therefore contrary to the Federal Government's commitment to nuclear deterrence rather than an offensive nuclear capability; and

(d) calls on the Government to recognise the bike riders' justifiable demand that the Nurrungar facility be closed down with one year's notice in the light of the Government's well-known criticism of the SDI.
