CONSTITUTIONAL AND LEGAL AFFAIRS-STANDING COMMITTEE-PROPOSED REFERENCE

The Chairman of the Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs (Senator Tate), pursuant to notice, moved-That the following matter be referred to the Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs for inquiry and report as soon as possible: The desirability, feasibility and possible content of a national Bill of Rights for Australia.

Debate ensued.

Senator Durack moved an amendment, viz: At end of motion, add '', but that the Committee, in the course of its inquiry, not consider the provisions of any Bill on this subject prepared by the Government unless such Bill has been introduced into the Senate and referred to the Committee by a further resolution''.

Debate continued.

On the motion of the Minister for Community Services (Senator Grimes) the debate was adjourned.

Ordered-That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for a later hour of the day.
