Senator Brown asked the Minister for the Environment and Heritage, upon notice, on 19 July 2004:

With reference to Recherche Bay, Tasmania:

(1) What progress has been made in relation to the assessment of the Recherche Bay area for inclusion on the National Heritage List.

(2) (a) What detailed site assessment has been carried out; and (b) by whom and when was the assessment done.

(3) What is the timetable for completing the assessment and deciding whether to include the area on the list.

Senator Ian Campbell (Minister for the Environment and Heritage) —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) The nomination for this place for inclusion in the National Heritage List was received on 2 February 2004 with the Australian Heritage Council (the Council) commencing its twelve month assessment period on 2 March 2004. The Council placed an advertisement in a national newspaper on 2 April 2004 seeking public comment over a four week period. The Council has also commissioned a thematic study on coastal exploration sites, which will provide an improved context and comparative base for the assessment of the Recherche Bay nomination. This thematic project is due to be completed in October 2004.

(2) No detailed site assessment has been undertaken by the Council.

(3) The Council is required to make a recommendation to me within the 12 months statutory assessment period which concludes on 2 March 2005. Within 20 business days of receiving the assessment I am required to decide to list or not to list the place unless I decide to seek public comment on the inclusion or proposed inclusion of the place in the National Heritage List. If I decide to seek public comment then within 60 business days after the end of the period for comments (40 business days) I am required to decide whether the place should be listed or not.
