Senator O'Brien asked the Minister representing the Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources, upon notice, on 1 August 2003:

(1) What is the current total capacity of Australia's domestic excisable fuel ethanol production.

(2) What is the current total domestic demand for excisable fuel ethanol.


Senator Minchin (Minister for Finance and Administration) —The Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

According to figures provided by the two current ethanol producers the answers to the questions are as follows:

(1) 75-80 megalitres

(2) Over financial year 2002-2003 the demand for fuel ethanol was 76 megalitres.
