Senator ELLISON (Minister for Justice and Customs) (11:33 AM) —Text messaging is an area of increasing concern to law enforcement agencies across the board. I believe there is an ability to intercept text messages, so the technical aspects have advanced. However, the question is whether the legal requirements have kept abreast of technical developments, and I will have to take that on notice. Our telephone intercept warrants certainly cover telephones and there is some issue as to how far they go in relation to text messages. I will take that question on notice and advise the committee.
