Senator Robert Ray asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 9 March 1999:

What was the total cost during the 1997-98 financial year of the provision of newspapers, magazines and other periodicals to the minister's: (a) Parliament House office; (b) home/state ministerial office; and (c) private home.


Senator Newman (Family and Community Services; Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women) —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) (a) The Department of Defence paid the following amounts during the 1997-98 financial year for the provision of newspapers, magazines and other periodicals to the ministers' Parliament House offices:

Minister McLachlan—$3223.15—(Manuka Newsagency); $150.00—(Aviation Week & Space Technology): Total—$3373.15

Minister Bishop—$2212.25—(Manuka Newsagency)

(b) The Department of Defence paid the following amounts during the 1997-98 financial year for the provision of newspapers, magazines and other periodicals to the ministers' home/state ministerial offices:

Minister McLachlan—$1320.35—(Adelaide Newspapers)

Minister Bishop—Nil

(c) The Department of Defence paid the following amounts during the 1997-98 financial year for the provision of newspapers, magazines and other periodicals to the ministers' private homes:

Minister McLachlan—Nil

Minister Bishop—Nil.
