Senator DENMAN —My question is directed to Senator Ellison, representing the Minister for Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr Kemp. Did the previous ministers for both education and science promise to review the government's doubling of HECS charges for university science courses if enrolments fell? Given the three per cent fall in enrolments in 1997, and now the news that, for 1998, science applications have fallen by 7.3 per cent in some states, when will the minister honour the government's commitment?

Senator ELLISON —I am not aware of the prior statements made by the ministers you refer to, Senator Denman, but—

Senator Cook —What?

Senator Bob Collins —You were here when it was said.

Senator ELLISON —I do not recall those statements made by the prior ministers. I did not have responsibility for this aspect and nor do I have now. That is the responsibility of Dr Kemp in the other place. I will take the matter up with Dr Kemp and get back to the senator.
