Senator PATTERSON —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

  (a)notes that 19 September 1994 is Australian Breast Cancer Day throughout Australia;

  (b)condemns the Government:

    (i)for the fraud it perpetrated on the Australian public by claiming to commit, in the 1994-95 Budget, an additional $236.6 million over 5 years for breast cancer screening when $176 million of this amount was needed simply to continue the breast screening program at current levels, leaving only $12 million per year in additional funding, and

    (ii)for its irresponsibility in spending $16.4 million over 4 years on a national breast cancer centre which will undertake no research at a time when a pathetic total of only $1.4 million is spent annually on actual research into the causes and treatment of breast cancer; and

  (c)calls on the Government, as a matter of urgency, to ensure that research into the causes and treatment of breast cancer is funded appropriately.
