Senator WATSON (4.40 p.m.) —I thank the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy (Senator Sherry) for the detailed nature of his responses to the second reading debate. One issue I would take just a little further in terms of matters raised this afternoon; that is, an assurance that matters which are deemed to be in the so-called public interest initiate from the office of the ISC rather than from the office of the minister. I think an assurance on this issue will ensure that such private information will not be used for political purposes but for genuine purposes, when such information has its origins through the office of the independent ISC rather than, say, the office of a minister or parliamentary secretary.
