Senator PATTERSON —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—


    (i)the damning findings of the Gregory Report Stage Two into nursing home funding arrangements which concludes amongst other things that:

      (A)the lack of incentive provided by the Commonwealth's funding system is directly responsible for the low level of capital investment in and the deleterious state of nursing homes, and

      (B)while well over $103 million a year is needed to maintain the existing quality of non-government beds, a further $125 million a year is needed to upgrade existing facilities;

    (ii)that current problems in nursing homes include toilets that are not large enough to allow assistance for residents with frames or wheelchairs, multi-storey buildings with no lifts, and shutes in multi-storey buildings being used for both food and soiled linen;

  (b)recognises that the nursing home industry has been imploring the Government to address this funding crisis since at least 1991; and

  (c)demands that the Labor Government address the continuing and deplorable crisis in nursing home funding.
