Senator BOURNE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

  (a)notes that July 1994 will mark 20 years since Turkey invaded Cyprus;

    (i)concern that, despite the peace making efforts of the United Nations (UN), there is still no solution to the situation in Cyprus, and

    (ii)support for UN resolutions regarding Cyprus and all peace initiatives presently being undertaken by the UN Secretary General;

  (c)endorses the contents of the UN Secretary General's latest report on Cyprus presented to the Security Council in June 1994 which outlines options for future directions on the Cyprus issue;

  (d)welcomes the position adopted by the Government of Cyprus which has co-operated with the UN in all attempts to reach a just and viable peace settlement and which has accepted the latest UN peace initiative;

  (e)notes that the Secretary General's report identifies the lack of political will on the Turkish Cypriot side as an impediment to a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus dispute;

  (f)urges all parties to co-operate fully and sincerely with the UN Secretary General in his attempts to find a peace settlement; and

  (g)calls on all responsibly-minded members of the international community, including Australia, to increase their efforts in ensuring that a lasting peace settlement is reached for all Cypriot people.
