Senator SPINDLER —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

  (a)notes that:

    (i)world-wide, the number of refugees has doubled in the decade after 1981 to about 20 million, and

    (ii)of the 13 000 refugees who get into Australia's refugee and humanitarian immigration programs, only 4 000 will have their air fares paid by the Australian Government;

  (b)recognises that for many of those who do not receive such assistance the cost of travel precludes them from coming to Australia;

  (c)applauds the work done by the Australian Council of Churches in setting-up a travel loan fund appeal to provide assistance to refugees coming to Australia; and

  (d)supports the call of the Australian Council of Churches for the Federal Government to consider:

    (i)covering the travel costs of humanitarian and special assistance categories of immigrants,

    (ii)establishing a revolving fund to provide interest free loans to cover the travel costs of immigrants in those categories, or

    (iii)matching the Australian Council of Churches travel loan fund on a dollar for dollar basis.
