(Question No. 1314)

Senator Bell asked the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, upon notice, on 3 May 1994:

  (1) Does the National Registration Authority (NRA) have information about contaminated soil at the Maribyrnong explosives factory; if so, how and when was this information obtained; if not, which authority or department does have, or should have such information.

(2)(a) If an attempt is made to decontaminate the soil at the Maribyrnong explosives factory, will the NRA be advised of this attempt and its results; and (b) will records be kept of the site's use as an explosives factory; if so, by whom and in what format.

  (3) Will the NRA inform itself of any other site(s) of chemical contamination of soil due to industrial or military processes; if so, how will the information be stored and to whom will it be available.

Senator Collins —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1), (2) and (3) Matters concerning the Maribyrnong explosives factory come under the portfolio responsibilities of the Department of Defence, and the above inquiry should therefore be redirected to my ministerial colleague Senator the Hon Robert Ray.
