Senator WATSON (4.49 p.m.) —I move:

6.Clause 53, page 22, at the end of proposed section 159UB, add the following subsection:

"(2) For the purposes of the meaning of heritage conservation works, the National Trust Classified Lists are, until 30 June 1995, deemed to be a recognised heritage register.".

In speaking to the amendment, I indicate that the opposition has been pressed very strongly by representatives of the National Trust of Australia for the inclusion of such an amendment. There is a limitation until 30 June, so we believe there is a necessary incentive to encourage the quick listing of heritage conservation works that are not on a state or Commonwealth register. However, from speaking to representatives of the government agencies, I understand that they are prepared to give this parliament a commitment. I now seek that commitment and, if we believe that is adequate, I may consider withdrawing the amendment that I have just moved.
