Senator SHERRY (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy) (12.24 p.m.) —I am sorry to get up again, but there are two matters which Senator Harradine has raised that I want to respond to. Firstly, the government has no doubt about its approach. We believe our advice and the way in which we are proceeding in this matter is correct. Because other people have raised doubts does not mean that the government has a doubt about its position. That is why we are proceeding in this way. Secondly, Senator Harradine referred to the advice of Mr Evans. The government does not accept that he is right. We believe he is wrong and I think we will have to respond to that in due course. We do not accept that Mr Evans is correct on this matter, and I do not believe his words should be taken as definitive or final on the issue.

Senator Harradine —But you operated as such when you were in opposition.

Senator SHERRY —As I said earlier, we have advice and we are confident that the manner in which we are proceeding via a request is the correct form. One thing I am sure of is that we will be debating this matter at another time, so I will conclude my comments there.
