Senator SANDERS —I direct my question to the Minister representing the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment. What have been the reasons for the Government's failure to proclaim the Lemonthyme and Southern Forests (Commission of Inquiry) Act? What progress has been made towards appointing the Commission of Inquiry and imposing the moratorium on logging in the potential qualifying areas designated in the Act?

Senator RYAN —In the absence of Tasmania's taking up of the Government's offer to settle the issue sensibly between us, our Government is implementing the provisions of the Act as a matter of priority. The Act now has royal assent. Appointments and proclamations of the Act are being pursued quickly so that the inquiry can proceed and an announcement will be made in due course.
