Senator REID —Will the Minister representing the Minister for Territories give an unequivocal assurance that all Australian Capital Territory fire units are in service and fully operational? Will he also give an assurance that the comments made by the Secretary of the Australian Capital Territory Firefighters Union, which appeared in the Canberra Times on 18 March, that five fire units were unsafe due to defective brakes and steering, non-existent sway bars and shock absorbers plus the non-design compliance of the skyjet ladder and snorkel unit, are incorrect?

Senator GIETZELT —All honourable senators and all residents of the Australian Capital Territory would be aware of the dispute that has continued for some time between the Australian Capital Territory Fire Brigade and the union and the difficulties that have flowed from that dispute as it relates to the responsibilities of those employed to look after property in the Canberra region. I would probably not help things if I were to say very much because the dispute is currently under discussion with the appropriate authorities and the Minister has, since his return from sick leave, had numerous discussions with a view to resolving it. I am led to believe that the dispute needs to be resolved. It should be resolved and steps have been taken by the Minister to reach that objective.
