To the Honourable the President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled. The petition of the undersigned citizens respectfully shows:

That the Australian flag symbolises the continuity between Australia's past, its present and its future.

The presence of the Union Jack on the flag represents not a subservience to Britain, but a reminder of our inheritance of the fruits of hundreds of years of struggle for individual liberty against the forces of tyranny and oppression.

Nonetheless recognises the rights of the Australian people should they wish as a people to change the design of their flag.

Your petitioners most humbly pray that no change be made to the Australian flag except with the consent of the people in a referendum.

And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
