Senator ARCHER —I ask a question of the Attorney-General who will recall my asking questions on 30 November and 8 December last year following the publication of allegations in the National Times based on bugged telephone calls . When the Attorney answered those questions was he aware of a file note prepared by Detective Chief Inspector Moller of the Australian Federal Police as the basis for a possible parliamentary question and which referred to the payment of money for the upkeep of an interception facility used to make the recordings and the conclusion that it was doubtful that the interception was authorised?

Senator GARETH EVANS —I have no recollection of any such file note but I will certainly check my files and records on that and see what further information I can give to the honourable senator.
