Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition)(6.43) —The point of misunderstanding is now clear. There is no doubt that the Manager of Government Business advised the Whip on our side that this matter was coming on. I was aware that a motion would be moved but not when the matter would be brought on. That is why the difficulty arose. I would have preferred that the matter be dealt with tomorrow but in the light of the fact that the existing Senate resolution requires the material to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions tomorrow and in view of the undoubted efficiency of the Clerk which would mean that all the material could be sent off at one minute past nine tomorrow, it would be better if we dealt with this matter tonight. The Opposition will support the motion of rescission for the reasons outlined when Senator Tate made his statement earlier today.
