Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition)(4.04) —In the light of the situation we have reached in respect of the further Senate action proposed in this matter and, indeed, of the establishment of a fresh Committee and the appointment of Commissioners, it is probably a good thing if we do not prolong debate on this item at this stage. The matter is being dealt with by a Senate Committee, there is further public evidence to be taken and at this stage I cannot see that the position would be advanced by indulging in debate on the first report, which has had a great deal of consideration from the Senate. Indeed, I think that this matter has had more of the attention of the Senate, in terms of consideration of the appropriate course of action, than any other item during the Budget session. In all the circumstances, I think the appropriate course would be to adjourn this matter. I think that the matter should remain on the Notice Paper because it is a significant matter for the Senate and the Parliament. I believe that at a later time the totality of the Senate's examination of this matter may wish to be debated. I seek leave to continue my remarks later.

Leave granted; debate adjourned.
