Senator PETER BAUME(12.26) —Yesterday was the last day of duty of Dr Sam Richardson as Principal of the Canberra College of Advanced Education. It would be in- appropriate to let that occasion pass without comment in the Senate. Dr Sam Richardson has been for some 16 years, I believe, a distinguished Principal of the Canberra College of Advanced Education. He has been a very good ambassador for the college and he has been a friend of government in terms of the advice he has given and his willingness and capacity to resolve problems which may have existed between government and the college. At all times he has presented the case for the Canberra College of Advanced Education with skill and dedication. I believe that all people associated with education-all those associated with the advanced education sector and all those associated with the institution he has represented-will wish him well both in the sea voyage he is about to take to England and in his eventual retirement in Australia.

I also place on record our welcome to Dr Parfitt who will be the new Principal of Canberra College of Advanced Education. I understand he will take up his post within the next month and that Dr Richardson is making certain that he will not be around for at least the next six months, to give his successor a chance to establish himself without, as it were, the old dog being around to bark. I would like to make sure that the good wishes of the Opposition go to Dr Richardson for a job well done and for a race well run, and to Dr Parfitt for the enterprise on which he is about to embark.
