Senator GARETH EVANS (Attorney-General) —by leave-I move:

That, in accordance with paragraph (10) of the resolution of the Senate of 6 September 1984 establishing the Select Committee on Allegations Concerning a Judge, the Hon. Francis Xavier Connor, QC, and the Hon. John Leonard Clifton Wickham, QC, be appointed the Commissioners Assisting the Committee.

The Hon. John Wickham, QC, aged 65, recently retired from the Supreme Court of Western Australia, having been a judge since 1969, the senior puisne judge since 1981, and a legal practitioner since 1942. He was admitted to the independent Bar in 1962. He was the Foundation Chancellor of Murdoch University from 1974 to 1980.

The Hon. Xavier Connor, QC, is aged 66. He was a judge of the Australian Capital Territory Supreme Court from 1972 to 1982 and a judge of the Federal Court from 1978 to 1982. He headed the Board of Inquiry into Casinos in Victoria in 1982. He is currently President of the Courts-Martial Appeals Tribunal and Chairman of the Committee of Review of the Special Broadcasting Service.

They are both distinguished men who have served their community well. I am sure that they will serve the Committee and the Parliament equally well in the very delicate and difficult task that lies ahead of them and the Committee.
