Senator SCOTT (Leader of the National Party of Australia)(5.16) -I move:

That the Senate take note of the paper.

This is an agreement between the Commonwealth of Australia and KKFC Pty Ltd, a fishing organisation. The agreement refers to fishing in the Australian fishing zone waters in the north-western and northern seas around this country. It is of particular significance because it refers and contributes to the Australianisation of the fishing industry in those areas. It provides facilities for the fishermen involved to come into joint ventures and, indeed, to sell the catch of the joint venture to the Taiwanese. I am informed that the Taiwanese are prepared to pass on the expertise of Australian fishermen and to assist with the provision of equipment.

This venture, hopefully, will bring not only additional revenue to the Commonwealth but also additional expertise and capacity in the fishing industry. I hope that the agreement, when put into place, is as materially effective as the parties to it believe it will be.

Mr Deputy President, I seek leave to continue my remarks later.

Leave granted; debate adjourned.
