(Question No. 904)

Senator Bolkus asked the Minister representing the Minister for Aviation, upon notice, on 29 May 1984:

(1) Does the Westpac Banking Corporation advertise on the back of Trans Australia Airlines boarding passes;

(2) Is TAA bound by statute to use the Commonwealth Bank;

(3) Why is it that TAA has chosen Westpac to advertise in this way rather than the Commonwealth Bank?

Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Aviation has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) Yes;

(2) No;

(3) TAA advise that an advertising consultant negotiated with TAA to secure the rights to the space on the back of boarding passes for advertising purposes. The consultant subsequently sold the space to Westpac with agreement from TAA. The decision to allow such advertising was made on purely commercial grounds.
