Senator ELSTOB(10.21) —by leave-I move:

That leave be granted to the Standing Committee on Social Welfare to meet during sittings of the Senate this day.

The Senate Standing Committee on Social Welfare had a meeting scheduled for last Wednesday which was cancelled. It is imperative for the meeting to go ahead tonight. We have had difficulty in getting some of the witnesses before the Committee. If the Senate were to grant leave to the Committee to meet it would be very helpful so that it could continue inquiring into its current reference. I take note of what many honourable senators have said. We have tried to plan our meetings so that they would not coincide with the sittings of the Senate, but in this circumstance it was almost impossible to do so. I ask that honourable senators take note of the request.
