Senator GARETH EVANS (Attorney-General)(8.53) —I simply indicate that I have very considerable sympathy for the point of view that has just been expressed very articulately by Senator Durack. I have some concern that the reach of these immunities may be too wide. However, the judgment has been made that for the moment we will proceed down this track. I certainly undertake here, as with a number of other rather tricky aspects of this legislation, to monitor the matter very closely, to review the way in which it is working and to bring back to this Parliament appropriate remedial legislation should it prove to be the case that it is operating in a far too restrictive way. I fully accept the thrust of what Senator Durack has said on this and the spirit in which he has said it.

Amendment agreed to.
