Senator GARETH EVANS (Attorney-General)(4.44) —I indicate in the spirit of grace and charm for which I am famous that I am perfectly happy to accommodate Senator Durack's wishes. I would not like to think that the delay is going to improve his chances of passage. But if he thinks so, we will be only too delighted to accommodate him.

Clause 44 (Application of Ombudsman Act).

The CHAIRMAN —With that warning given to Senator Durack, we will leave the question of the membership of the authority and quorums and turn to the next matters-the Ombudsman, judicial audit and the parliamentary committee. I give notice to the Committee of how I intend to handle the amendments. I will deal with the amendments in the following sequence: The Opposition amendment No. (29) to leave out clause 44; the Opposition amendment No. (32), and the Democrats amendment No. (14) which is similar, to leave out clause 47; the Democrats amendment No. (13) to insert new part 2A after clause 43; and, if that is negatived, I will give the Opposition an opportunity to move its amendment No. ( 33) to insert a new Part IV after clause 50. If that arrangement is acceptable to the Committee, the first matter is Opposition's amendment No. (29) to leave out clause 44.
