Senator DURACK(8.15) —I wish to emphasise that my amendment, which I have moved on behalf of the Opposition, gives effect to the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs in two respects-namely, that the limitation in respect of offences carrying a penalty of more than three years be removed and that the definition of relevant offences be expanded in such a way as is illustrative rather than definitive. I would have thought that the members of the Committee, of which Senator Chipp was a distinguished member and which made this recommendation as one of its high points, would look favourably on the Opposition amendment. I hope that on final reflection that will be the case and the honourable senators will support the amendment.

Question put:

That the words proposed to be left out (Senator Durack's amendment) be left out .
