(Question No. 767)

Senator Maguire asked the Minister representing the Minister for Transport, upon notice, on 28 March 1984:

(1) What services are currently operated on the Adelaide to Peterborough broad gauge railway via Burra.

(2) Is it proposed to terminate freight services to and from Adelaide at Hallett.

(3) Is it proposed to terminate passenger services at Burra; if so, why.

(4) Has a study been conducted into the feasibility of converting the railway to standard gauge; if so, what are the findings of the study.

Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Transport has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) Current Adelaide-Peterborough line timetable:

Local services-Departs Adelaide 5.50 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Departs Peterborough 7.05 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday .

All Indian Pacific connections have been transferred to Port Pirie:

Freight Services:

Train 5710 departs Burra at 12.10 p.m. Thursday and arrives Mile End 5.45 p.m. Thursday.

Train 4785 departs Mile End at 6.00 p.m. Wednesday and arrives Burra 1.00 a.m. Thursday.

Additional services would be mounted if there was a demand.

(2) and (3) I am advised Australian National-AN-has no plans at present to terminate freight services at Hallett or passenger services at Burra. Future consideration would depend upon the demand for and impact on AN's finances of these services.

(4) A study has not been conducted to convert the Adelaide/Burra line to standard gauge.
