Senator PETER RAE —I seek leave to make a very brief statement in relation to the first matter discussed this afternoon, the report on the review of Australia's coastal surveillance and protection. It will be a very brief statement.

Leave granted.

Senator PETER RAE —I thought of moving a supplementary motion to the motion that the Senate take note of the paper but then preferred to take the course that I now propose, which is simply to make the request that the Minister for Veterans' Affairs (Senator Gietzelt) arrange for the report of the debate on the report to be referred to the Minister for Transport (Mr Peter Morris) with a request that a reply be given to the Senate. Matters were raised which are of concern to a cross section of people in the chamber. I initially moved that the Senate take note of the paper, and I ask simply that the Minister consider giving an undertaking to make that arrangement. There being no other specific procedure under the Standing Orders for that arrangement to be undertaken, it seemed to be the simplest way was to seek leave and ask the Minister to do so.
