(Question No. 799)

Senator Missen asked the Minister representing the Minister for Home Affairs and Environment, upon notice, on 3 April 1984:

Has the present policy of the Australian Government with its excessive quotas for the killing of kangaroos led to widespread complaints and hostility in many parts of the world, in particular in the United States of America.

Senator Ryan —The Minister for Home Affairs and Environment has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The quotas are not excessive and were finalised after detailed discussions with State wildlife authorities.

Kangaroo management in Australia has been misrepresented overseas by some groups, leading to a number of protests and representations to our overseas posts. However there has been no official overseas comment on 1984 quotas.
