Mr CREAN (Leader of the Opposition) (2:08 PM) —Mr Speaker, on indulgence, just to respond briefly, I do appreciate the fact that the Prime Minister briefed me on this issue earlier today. The situation in the Solomon Islands has been deteriorating for some time. We here cannot ignore it. It does have serious consequences for us. The Labor Party has been arguing for some time the importance of regional security. We would support an Australian commitment to restore security if a request from the Solomon Islands came. On the question of the composition of that commitment, we will be seeking further briefings from the relevant departments. We will also be seeking the view of our neighbours in the region.
