Mr SLIPPER (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance and Administration) (11:28 AM) —I move:

Customs Tariff Proposal No. 1 (2003)

The tariff proposal that I have just tabled contains alterations to the Customs Tariff Act 1995.

The proposal formally places before parliament an amendment to the tariff, which specifies that the chemical paraquat dichloride of subheading 2933.39.00 includes an added emetic, for safety reasons.

This amendment corrects an anomaly in the tariff that sees paraquat dichloride with an added emetic, which is a safety agent that induces vomiting if swallowed, attract a duty rate of five per cent whereas paraquat dichloride without an emetic receives a duty rate of free. The purpose of the emetic is to achieve the same safety outcome as the addition of other allowable anti-dusting, colouring or stenching agents, which do not attract import duty.

A summary of the alterations contained in this proposal has been prepared and is being circulated.

I commend the proposal to the chamber.

Debate (on motion by Mr Sidebottom) adjourned.
