Mr Bevis asked the Minister for Defence Industry, Science and Personnel, upon notice, on 20 November 1997:

(1) What was the total annual cost, at maturity in February 1997, of the Ready Reserve 6th Brigade.

(2) How was the cost calculated.

Mrs Bishop (Defence Industry, Science and Personnel) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) $117,786,643.

(2) The cost was calculated over the period March 1996 to February 1997 and includes all costs of personnel (including housing), replenishment stores, administration and facilities operations. The part time military salaries, replenishment stores and administrative costs are actual costs. Full time military salaries, civilian salaries and facilities operations costs were calculated using the Ready Reckoner of Personnel Costs and Related Overheads Edition 4, July 1996. The full time military salary costs and civilian salary costs were calculated using the strength figures for February 1997.

Members might like to note that this cost accords with the findings of the 1995 Review of the Ready Reserve Scheme conducted by the Department of Defence, which estimated the cost of a Ready Reserve brigade to be 63 per cent of the cost of a full time regular brigade.
