(Question No. 5135)

Mr Reith asked the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism, upon notice, on 24 February 1987:

(1) How many copies of the (a) Public Service, (b) General and (c) Purchasing and Disposals issues of the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette were produced in 1985-86.

(2) What were the costs of production of the Gazettes in 1985-86.

(3) To whom are Gazettes distributed.

(4) Do Gazettes earn revenue; if so, what sum was earned in 1985-86.

Mr John Brown —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) (a) 462,884 (b) 202,024 (c) 219,820.

(2) The estimated cost of producing all Gazettes in 1985-86 was $3,897,000.

(3) Gazettes are distributed: on a sale basis through Commonwealth Government Bookshops and the Australian Government Publishing Service (AGPS) Mail Order service; and on a free issue basis through the AGPS Free Distribution scheme. Under the Free Distribution scheme, the following groups are entitled to receive copies of Gazettes free of charge within certain quantity limits:

(a) Commonwealth Government departments and statutory authorities staffed under the Public Service Act, and authorities for which the Public Service Board has some statutory role in relation to employment conditions.

(b) Members of Parliament.

(c) AGPS Deposit and Free Issue libraries (National Library of Australia and State libraries, University libraries).

(d) National Library of Australia exchange partners (on request from the Library).

(e) Post Offices (Public Service, General and Purchasing and Disposals issues only).

(f) State parliamentary libraries.

(g) Departmental Secretaries and chairpersons of statutory authorities with Secretary status, Senate and House of Representatives Table Offices (Special issues only).

Note that funding shortages have recently forced AGPS to refuse requests for extensions to the number of copies of Gazettes distributed under the Free Distribution scheme. The Free Distribution scheme itself is also under review.

(4) Yes; approximately $1,623,000.
