(Question No. 4837)

Mr Hodges asked the Minister representing the Minister for Education, upon notice, on 22 October 1986:

Has the Government issued directions to those academic institutions which sell research results to private enterprise concerning the duties of staff and the apportionment of their time between research and teaching activities; if so, what are the details of the directions.

Mr Dawkins —The Minister for Education has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question:

The Government provides funding for the general teaching and research activities of higher education institutions. It has also encouraged institutions to seek outside sources of funding for activities such as research. Any guidelines covering research for outside bodies and the sale of results would be established by institutions. The Government has not issued guidelines to academic institutions.
