Mr Tickner asked the Attorney-General, upon notice, on 17 September 1985:

(1) How many certificates have been issued under the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 to enable court action to be brought for a breach of the Act.

(2) What was the (a) number and (b) result of actions that have come before the courts.


Mr Lionel Bowen —The answer to the honourable member's question, based on information provided by the Human Rights Commission, is as follows:

In the years 1977, 1978 and 1984 more than one certificate was granted in respect of complaints regarding the same alleged incidents.

(2) (a) and (b) The Human Rights Commission does not keep records of court proceedings initiated by private individuals who have received certificates under the Racial Discrimination Act.
