Australian Telecommunications Commission

The information sought is not readily available in the form asked for by the honourable member. During 1984-85 114 Telecom staff travelled overseas on official visits and it would require the application of considerable resources in terms of time and cost at the expense of higher priority duties in order to collate the information in such a way as to answer each part of this question. However, the following details are provided:

(a) The purpose of the visits was primarily to:

(i) attend international conferences including participation in Study Group meetings of the ITU;

(ii) investigate overseas technical developments, and management and marketing techniques;

(iii) progress contractual commitments with equipment manufacturers.

(b) The classification of officers involved ranged from Engineer Class 3 or equivalent, to senior management staff.

(c) The average duration of each visit was 4 weeks.

(d) Countries visited included the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Japan, Sweden, West Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore and China.

(e) On average, the cost of each visit was $10,000 of which approximately half was for air fares.

Australian Broadcasting Corporation

To provide the information asked for, the ABC would need to employ someone specifically to obtain the details from numerous files held on overseas visits. The Corporation could not justify the resource costs involved.

The Overseas Telecommunications Commission (Australia)

OTC operates in an international environment with a consequent need for extensive travel by officers of the Commission to attend meetings dealing with operational and commercial matters, facilities provisioning and co-ordination. To provide the information sought would be a task of some magnitude involving significant resource costs which could not be justified.
