To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives in Parliament assembled. We the undersigned Petitioners, call upon the Commonwealth Government to reverse its recent decision which denies Secondary Allowance to year 11 students under the age of 16 years.

In making this request, we give as an example the City of Redcliffe, where approximately 91% of otherwise eligible students entering year 11 will not be able to receive Austudy at the beginning of the school year as they will not have reached the specified age of 16 years.

We feel this decision by the Government will have a very detrimental effect on the ability of low income families to keep their children at school in years 11 and 12.

Further, the decision to pay Austudy direct to secondary students means the assistance will not be targeted to those who bear the cost of this education-the parents.

We humbly request reassessment of Education spending priorities and a restoration of payment of this allowance to the families of year 11 students, regardless of that student's age.

And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
