(Question No. 4907)

Mr Tickner asked the Minister for Transport, upon notice, on 14 November 1986:

Is he giving consideration to a prohibition on smoking on interstate coach services; if so, when will action be taken.

Mr Peter Morris —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

No. The question of smoking on long distance coaches is primarily a matter for the commercial judgment of the operators concerned within the framework of arrangements administered by respective State and Territory authorities.

I am advised that on most interstate routes non-smoking coach services are in operation and attracting patronage from people who wish to travel in a smoke free environment.
