Mr LEO McLEAY —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That this House-

(1) deplores yesterday's action of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus in making a unilateral declaration of independence; and

(2) calls upon the Turkish Government to use its good offices with the Turkish Cypriot leader to ensure a reconciliation of the problems between the Turkish Cypriot people and the Greek Cypriot people and a return to the conference table to have this problem settled by the United Nations rather than by a unilateral declaration of independence.

Mr Peacock-Mr Acting Speaker, with your indulgence, the Opposition agrees with the notice of motion given by the honourable member. I would not wish to embarrass him by calling it on if he was not ready; but, if he wishes to debate the matter, and subject to the wishes of the Leader of the House (Mr Lionel Bowen), we can call it on now. Otherwise, I would like him to know that we join him in the sentiments he has expressed in his notice of motion.

Mr Lionel Bowen-Mr Acting Speaker, with your indulgence, this is a very important matter. I would like to give consideration to perhaps having a debate later in the day. The Foreign Minister (Mr Hayden), I know, has a keen interest in this matter. The expressions by the honourable member for Grayndler (Mr Leo McLeay) and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Peacock) would definitely be in accordance with the Government's view. The only thing I have some difficulty with is trying to get the legislative program through. We will see whether we can make some arrangements.
