Ms MAYER —I present the 209th report of the Joint Committee of Public Accounts, relating to reports of the Auditor-General 1980-81, and I ask leave of the House to make a short statement in connection with the report.

Leave granted.

Ms MAYER —The 209th report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee of Public Accounts is an examination of reports of the Auditor-General for 1980-81. Each year the Committee examines all reports of the Auditor-General. In respect of the reports of the Auditor-General for the year ended 30 June 1981 the Committee sought written submissions from nine departments about 11 of the items raised. After discussions with the Auditor-General and departmental officers, the Committee selected four of those items for public inquiry. Public hearings on 20 May 1982 occurred in respect of the Department of Finance, in relation to expenditure in excess of warrants of the Governor-General and closing of accounts at year end including moneys unbanked, and the Department of Social Security in relation to the national benefits system and assistance for homeless persons.
